Behind The Photo // Capturing the northern lights in Utah is a test of having one's camera and cold weather gear ready at the drop of a hat, being flexible and willing to alter plans, and making quick decisions on the fly. After being out of town during some prime light displays in years prior, I *HAD* to jump off the couch, ditch my comfy pants, brew up a hot beverage, bundle up in my warmest down coat and make some snap decisions on where to go.
Alta was high on my list, and I knew Hellgate would offer the right angle in the sky to capture the northern lights so I went there first. Once my eyes adjusted I could see a faint red hue over the sky, and then saw it get much brighter over Hellgate. It slowly moved to the west and then the intensity quieted down again.
